Well as anyone who has been subjected to my whining this past week reference my cold, I have to let you know that:
a) it is getting better every day
b) I'm still tired (exhausted really)
c) I did manage a layout for a tag I was supposedly leading - will show you soon
and

d) best of all, I am the proud recipient of a Liebster blog award from my new friend Julie over at Glorygirl

Liebster, is German for 'dearest' or 'beloved' but it can also mean 'favorite'

The idea of the Liebster award is to bring attention to blogs with fewer than 200 followers. Love this idea to bring traffic to other bloggers!

One of the conditions in accepting the award is to pass it along to five more blogs. So, in the spirit of good fun I will be going through blogs I love to visit this week. I'm sure it won't be an easy task to only pick five!

Scrapping again!

Well the upside of my spouse's rude shove to wake me up (and stop my alleged snoring (I have a wicked cold) is that I had extra time to create today. :-)

Again, I'm working on the Sisterhood of Scrap challenges. I did this two page layout for two separate challenges. Gabby's other Papa got her a beautiful little metal sea set for Christmas this year. She had a wonderful time playing tea party with not only her mamma but Murphy's toys as well!

Good sunny afternoon to you all! It's a beautiful day out there. I may even take my poor neglected puppy for a walk. He's feeling pretty lonely since Gabby and Hugo left. They were the perfect height for him to play with! They weren't always the most gentle but he liked them anyway. :-)

Finally got back in my scrap room this morning and finished up this ayout that's been sitting on my desk since mid-January! Just getting time to work on it was a trick for sure.

I'm interested in your thoughts. I thought I'd take boring old hockey photos and paper and twist them a little for a Valentine's type layout. Let me know what you think of it. :-)

Completed for DT work at Tina's Scrapbooking and also a challenge at Sisterhood of Scrap. I used Creative Scrappers sketch #192 for inspiration.

Well despite all the fun and craziness around here this past month, I did manage to get a few layouts done. I'm pretty pleased with them!

Done for a Layout Tag at Scrapshotz as well as for a challenge at SOS a "doublemint" challenge - use two sets of two!

baking cookies and cakes

washing every single plastic dish I own - twice at least
visiting kitties
playing with Murphy (who has turned out to be a very good with toddler dog) (poor thing!)
dancing
playing in the snow
singing "Banana Phone" and other fun songs (I'll never get them out of my head!)
and other miscellaneous activities...

Yes, I did a lot of cleaning this week as well but there are no photos of that! LOL

New year!

Well after the Christmas rush and bustle was over, I had high hopes of getting back in my scrap room. However things rarely work according to plan and it seems that January was no exception. After a semester on paternity leave, my son and his wife asked if it would be OK for her and the kids to spend January with us while he went back home and studied for a big exam at the end of the month as well as starting to teach classes. We were delighted of course! No hesitation whatsoever. :-)

It didn't take long for "this" sign to appear on my studio door:

Although you can see my desk in the background, you will note the more basic, fundamental art & craft I've been engaged in this month hanging proudly on the door!

So you can see that I've been far busier "making" memories this month than I have been in scrapbooking them. It's been wonderful.

that I've been hanging out at the Sisterhood of Scrap forum lately? They have had an absolutely awesome month of challenges to get the mojo flowing. I've scrapped more this past month than in many a long day, that's for sure. A lot of the layouts you've seen on the blog lately have been from challenges posted there. What a help in getting Hugh's album caught up! Almost there...

This layout was from a challenge posted this morning. It's simple but asked me to actually use some glimmer spray... something I don't do very often! I like the way it turned out - simple and masculine I think.

I used papers from the Boys Rule Scrapbook October kit. Every month Laura Lee puts together a great kit full of BOY papers - she often has both little and big boy kits. I decided to take the plunge and ordered two of her latest little boy kits. This one - Jillibean Soup "spotted owl" - is just so full of fun, bright papers and lots of fun embellishments as well. I thought it looked great against the neutral background of the kraft cardstock.

Busy Scrapping Day!

This morning I sliced a banana into my coffee. I thought it might be a cosmic reminder to get my act back together and actually focus on things for a change. LOL

I know that I've sadly neglected to update my blog this past month. It's not that I haven't been scrapping or taking pictures, it's that I HAVE!!

I had the grandbabies here for Thanksgiving (took a ton of photos) but made it my mission to finish scrapping gs's album before I started in on the gorgeous photos we took that weekend. Why do I set these limitations on myself? Well, I guess because if I don't, I'll never finish.. oh the trials of being a procrastinator who just loves to "live in the moment"!

I went away to a scrap retreat in October. I started a mini-book for Hugh's first year. That's about all I did except a couple of layouts. It was a pathetic showing from a great weekend of fun and inspiration BUT it left me with a ton of page kits to just pick and work on when the mood strikes! I've been busy in my scraproom lately and want to share some of the layouts and projects I've been working on.

In the meantime though, here's a photo of our boy at Halloween... well for about 3 seconds the day BEFORE Halloween... he wasn't too impressed with his costume and was freaked out by the kids all coming to the door... ahh well... at least we have a photo. :-)

My computer is driving me crazy. Seriously crazy. In the last couple of months, it has run slower and slower. I'd like to think that it's because so much wisdom is stored in it's little mega-thingys, but I think the real reason is that in our consumable society, it was not built to last. Of course the technology in it is probably last century but hey.. so am I!

I've completed a couple of layouts lately. You'd think I'd be more prolific with the scrapbooking now that my room is more or less organized, wouldn't you? Well, if you think that, you'd be wrong! I have many layouts in my head that I'm dying to get down on paper. The truth is though that I just don't have the energy to even sit in there some days. This article describes the exact way I feel about things in a way that I've never been able to. I hope you'll take a few minutes and read it if you want to understand not only me, but people in your life who deal with chronic hidden illnesses on a day-to-day basis.

OK enough of that. This blog is about my scrapping and perhaps my photography as well. My little Murphy graduated from his beginner level agility class the other night. I am sure that the instructor keeps passing him because she gets such a kick out of the little social butterfly. He's the class clown and always wants to be where any action is.

And without further adieu, here is the first of my recent layouts. A collage from last year's big trek to Saskatchewan.

Well you would think that organizing my scraproom has taken over my life. If this is what you're thinking, you're not far wrong! I've been so busy organizing that I have not been "doing". Ugh. Yesterday I decided that I could wait no longer. I unloaded and put away the bag I'd packed to go scrapping with the girls last Saturday and found the layout I'd started. I was compelled to finish it and LOVE how it turned out. I should actually finish all the layouts from summer 2010. I'm sure there are a few beauties left to discover.

I have been actually working in my scraproom, there just isn't a lot to show for it! Actually I ripped apart the big closet and got some new shelving and this morning actually labelled things. :-)

In between those fun little activities (that are taking way more time than I would like to admit) I've worked on a few layouts and planned a few more. Here's a small sample of what I've been doing lately.

Long time no scrap!

Well I'm getting back in the scrapping saddle. The baby was born, everyone is safe and sound at home. I've had a really relaxing summer and am working on a few projects in my scraproom and around the house. It feels good to be "back" at it!

Here's a layout I did for a challenge over at Scrap Shotz. It was a hard one "community" - i.e. something that happened in your community and took me THREE DAYS to finally "see it". Finished it this morning. It's of a baby shower for my beautiful grandson put on by the local church on June 26, 2011. I'm pleased with it!

Ready for a Road trip? How about a three-hour tour?

Remember the television show Gilligan’s Island? Well, like Gilligan and his cohorts, we’re going on a trip. If you want to hear the theme song of this iconic television show, check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfR7qxtgCgY. Gilligan’s Island ran for three seasons from 1964-1967. It delighted many viewers who watched the shipwrecked castaways attempting to leave the remote island, while various opportunities present themselves. They typically fail owing to some bumbling error committed by Gilligan (with the exception of "The Big Gold Strike", where everyone except Gilligan is responsible for their failed escape). Sometimes this would result in his saving the others from some unforeseen flaw in their plan.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!

To participate in this "tour" you must lift the CARD OR LAYOUT of the person in front of you.

The only twist is that we will use the word “Gilligan” as a tool for playing this “game”. For instance, I used the “G” as inspiration for my layout by scrapping a GIRL. The person who follows me will use an “I” and the person after that uses an “L” and so on. Once the name “Gilligan” is spelled out in entirety, the next person goes back to the beginning with the “G” in Gilligan.

The KEY is that unlike the castaways, you only have ONE HOUR to post your completed project...

...you must dibs your turn by posting "DIBS" after the preceding project.

If someone else has called DIBS you must wait until they have uploaded their project to DIBS that one...

Once your completed project is uploaded, you may take the special blinkie that let’s the world know that you’ve not only taken the tour, but survived to tell the tale as well!

Have fun and let’s take as many trips as possible this weekend!

All month long, Scrap~tures has been celebrating its first birthday with challenges and inspiration daily. I had a birthday card to make this month so chose the challenge from Day 3 found here

If the young lady for whom the card is intended, was at my house for her birthday, I'd probably make her a delectible chocolate cake. Here is our family's favourite recipe!

Chocolate Oatmeal Cake

Ingredients:

½ cup oatmeal

1 cup boiling water

½ cup margarine

4 TB cocoa

1½ cup brown sugar

2 eggs

1 cup flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp vanilla

pinch of salt

Directions:

Mix first set of ingredients and let sit a few min. Add rest of ingredients. Mix and pour into 8x8 pan. Bake at 350º for 35 min.

We have been working hard behind the scenes to provide inspirational challenges, based on “traditional” anniversary gift lists, that will run all month long. Not ignoring you!

No, my faithful followers, I haven't been ignoring you. I've been busy doing various projects around the house in preparation for my NEW SCRAPTURES DECEMBER KIT to arrive (and it did) and I'm DROOLING all over my keyboard at the gorgeous-ness of it!

I've been clearing a path through my scrap room so I can get started creating with these beautiful papers.

I've also been wrapping Christmas gifts and organizing flights home for my dd for Christmas. I DID go to a card making class - taught by the very talented Michelle Sturgeon - on Friday night and as soon as it's light enough, I want to take a photo of the beautiful cards and show you.

So I'm not ignoring you.. I do think of you often. :-)

A friend sent me this link http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/allinonebox/ and I thought it looked easy enough even for a dysfunctional 'crafter' like myself so I gave it a try.

No word of a lie. If you're looking for a fun, fast and decorative little "favour" look no further. Even with my lame paper folding skills, I was able to complete the first one I did in 20 minutes - slightly longer than the video at the link above. Deciding to try the "embossed" variation - even allowing for time spent going back and forth between my computer and my cuttlebug (different rooms), the second one took even less time.

Embellishing is definitely the most fun step. You know me with my ribbon and flower fetish!

Let's see what you can do ladies! From everyone who completes this little project - AND UPLOADS IT TO THE GALLERY AND THIS THREAD - I'll draw for a RAK from moi. Enough incentive?

Lace flower tutorial

Welcome to Scrappy Hour! I hope you like the fun but beautiful (and sometimes stunning IMO) project I have for you tonight. I'll be here for a little while but you know me, early to bed! I will however be around tomorrow to answer any questions you may have.

I'd like to show you how to make a lovely lace flower. I love to use flowers and love an old fashioned look and feel. Lace flowers are some of my favourites. I can't always afford a Prima - nor do I always have the perfect one "on hand". As you know, I adore fabric and all things textile so making these was a natural progression for me. To make these beauties, follow these easy steps:

Materials:
lace
wire
center object

1. pick your lace. Decide on your center look. As a general rule, I like to use lace that is about 1" in width. Depending on what you want to center in your lace however determines how wide your lace needs to be, the bigger the center (and the final dimension of the flower) the wider the lace. The smaller? The reverse is true.

I also like if possible to use wire for this project (this project is also easily done with needle and thread instead of wire). Wire is just firmer and helps me with my spazzy (MS) hands to work easier! Here I've chosen a butterfly (I love using butterflies on my pages!) to work with. You can also use twist ties or other florist type wire. You won't see it when you're done. My lace is also smaller in the demonstration photos than I normall work with because I wanted some small flowers for my project. It's 3/4" wide.

How much lace? As a general rule of thumb, use double the length of the wire that you're going to use.

2. Starting at one end, thread your wire (or needle and thread) through every other (or so - this is not an exact science) loop in the top of one side of your lace. Do this until you have approximately double the length of lace compared to the length of wire - or until it looks good TO YOU. This project is all about what YOU like.

3. One thing I find helpful is to curl my wire as I go to make sure the gathers in the lace are the fullness I'm wanting to see. If it's not right, I can remove some or keep going. Again, this is a personal choice.

4. When you've reached about as far as you want to go and the gathered lace is as full as you'd like it to be, cut the remaining lace.

5. Now comes the "fun" part. Just take the loose end of the wire so the two ends are twisted together Et voila! Just press and crinkle and shape to your liking and you're done!

Now, I didn't end up liking that green butterfly on the size of lace I chose so replaced it with the antique button you see on the flower below. Each one of these beauties took me under 5 minutes to make (longer if you have to stop and take photos along the way ) and you'll be seeing them on layouts of mine in the near future.

My first thought when I saw this kit was that it was perfect for a variety of my summer “vacation” photos! For this layout, I started with the “Days Away” paper. Using the luscious butter cream cardstock, I cut a shape reminiscent of a highway sign and applied it slightly off center of the busy paper. Over that, I layered a portion of the “Envelopes Die Cut” paper from the deluxe kit. I wanted to save some for other layouts so only used a little bit! I took my black and white photo, sanded and inked the edges and matted it on the back of the “Travel Ticking” paper, which I also sanded and inked. Using a strip of the “Travel Skirt” paper, I cut a small border to mimic a ribbon crossing my page in order to give my eye-line a “break”. I computer journaled on the back of one of the tags and applied it to my layout with some twine. I made a couple of “scruffy” paper flowers using two different sizes of circle punches and the “Travel Ticking” paper (both sides) as well as the “Days Away” paper. To make these I punched the circles, distressed and inked the edges then crumpled the circles to create a flower shape. I put a button with threaded twine in the circle of each. Cutting the title with my new Cricut machine – inking the edges of the letters to have them stand out - and applying various die cuts and an epoxy charm finished off the layout.

A few years ago, I met an online woman known only as “pajamascrapper” a name I found fascinating. Over the years since, I’ve come to know her real identity but the concept behind her nameis truly appealing to me!
One of the greatest things about scrapbooking I think is that it is often done in the privacy of my own home. I have a great scrap room with custom-built shelves and desk so nobody but me (and my online friends) can “see” what I’m doing. This means that I do not have to dress for the day OR in any certain manner. Nobody cares what my hair looks like or if I’ve brushed my teeth or not.

Pajama scrapping is one of the reasons I love this hobby. It suits me and allows me to relax in a manner I see fit. For me the time of day when the bra can come off is unlike no other. To release my “girls” gives a sense of true freedom and putting on my long nightie or my loose flannel pants and sweatshirt seems to release my creativity as well. It is then that I venture into my scrap room to play with my paper and create.

This relaxed concept may not suit everyone but for me it’s perfect. I no longer have children at home and my husband knows how to cook for himself. He is happy when I am otherwise occupied because it leaves him free to pursue his own past-times. This past weekend I participated fully in the online crop here at Scrapshotz. The design team outdid itself once again with their challenges (check the gallery if you don’t believe me!) and the fact that the theme was “FASHION”, is what caused me to think about dressing (or undressing).

Seriously, I have been hanging around this scrapbook world for a few years now and I’ve YET to hear anyone say, “Man, I can’t wait to get home and do my hair and nails for a great evening of scrapping!” Generally, what you hear is something along the lines of, “I can’t wait to get home and into my comfy clothes (aka pajamas in my case), and after the kids are in bed, watch some mindless television while I scrap.” In preparation for an online crop, often questions asked in the forum ahead of time are, “Do you have your photos? Do you have your snacks? Do you have your comfy clothes?”

Even when you participate in a day crop outside your home – especially in a group of friends - if you look around, you probably won’t see anyone dressed to the nines (so to speak). Most of the women there will be in stretchy pants (or loose jeans), hair pushed back (certainly not done at the hairdresser before she arrived) and little if any makeup. Hey! Maybe you run in fancier circles than I do but that’s how my friends show up for a day of scrapping!

When I go to weekend crops, what I see as far as dress is even MORE relaxed because you see your friends in all manner of dress and undress. We do shower (one of our friends even brings her own toilet paper for comfort!) but the dress code is always casual. As you’ve learned if you read this blog, packing for a crop is a complicated business so if you do manage to find room for a small bag of your clothes it’s a real bonus!

So back to this whole concept of pajama scrapping, whether you wear your actual pajamas to scrap, or just put on some pseudo-pajamas in the form of comfy clothes, the concept is the same. Scrapbooking is not a hobby you need to dress for. In fact, an argument can be made that it’s a hobby that you undress for. And before anyone starts thinking about naked scrapbooking, I have to say that is a whole other topic and something you probably “should” do in the privacy of your home… and please stay from that heat embossing tool if you do!!!

I've got a secret! Well it's not much of a secret anymore, I've been asked to be part of the design team over at Scraptures (http://www.scraptures.ca/) for the next three months. This means that I'll be using their lovely kits to scrapbook and provide inspiration for the members.

I can't wait to get started! My term officially began on Aug 1 but life has been so crazy with dh away and my cute little gd and her mommy sticking around for the month, that I've not had a lot of time to spend letting you all know what's going on.

I'll be working on the blog more in the coming weeks as little Miss Cutie goes home next week just after her first birthday. Wow, time flies! Anyway, in the mean time, check out the forum. It's a nice little place with a lot of inspiration.

Back from the West

Well, we arrived home last night after putting another 5000 km on the old green van. That thing has been so faithful over the years and didn't let us down this trip either. Gabby was a great little traveller and managed the six solid days of driving (three there and three back) like a champ. We lamented (jokingly) that we were just getting "good" at getting in and out of the car on day five. I also think day five is the day that a few of us lost our minds and Dad went for the ear plugs. Thankfull day six we were all so tired, we slept and he drove in peace.

One of the highlights of the trip was of course seeing the kids and spending time with them. Ds and dil celebrated their 2nd wedding anniversary while we were there so of course lots of photos were taken of them.

I have been a big fan of Becky Fleck's page maps for a long time so it was no surprise that I used one of hers (October 2009)as the basis of my challenge. I like how it all turned out and hope you do too!

Here are the five (yes FIVE) layouts I created using just the kit contents and one sheet of white cardstock. I still have plenty left over to play with :)

What a week!

Last time I wrote, I was telling you about the upcoming crop. Well the crop is over now and the tallying has been done for prizes and such. Here are the three challenges I offered up for the weekend and my sample layouts:

For this challenge I wanted people to use the birthstone colour "bling" from whatever month they were capturing in their layout.

I chose these photos of gd's first photo shoot (I was the photographer) and since she was born in August and the shoot took place in August, I used peridot for the butterfly and the trail.

This layout was all about distressing. Some folks are distressed about their birthdays so I used some heritage photos (my grandfather, my father and myself) to create a distressed "heritage" layout for gd's scrapbook.

I used a lot of distressing techniques including sanding, ripping, inking, aging, Ranger Industries "Rock Candy", fabric and metal. I really like how this one turned out!

This challenge was all about numbers. Pretty simple. Use a number (i.e. the candles on your cake) in the title of your layout.

I chose this sweet photo of my ds and dil on their 1st anniversary this summer. The Bo Bunny Calypso paper, flowers and rub ons added to the fun, summer feel.

My final challenge was to create a masculine birthday card. I find it easy to make "pretty" cards but doing boy cards is a real challenge! This is a card I made a while ago but it worked perfectly for this challenge and for the time constraints I was under at the time.

I also did a game. I love the easy "guess how many" games at crops so I decided to do one for this crop as well. The person who came closest without going over was "inspiredscrapper" and she has a RAK coming her way in Monday's post!

I was sorry I couldn't be around the crop more. I did have a great time getting ready though. I love the push to create.

I'm really excited about a few things today. The most exciting is of course the start of The Paper Passion's one year birthday/anniversary crop. I've had a chance to see some of the "behind the scenes" work being done and it's amazing. You'll love it and for scrapbookers/card makers you'll get a LOT of inspiration.

LO tag! (October 2009)

This is one of my favourite scrapping games to play. Last week we played a round at The Paper Passion. Here's my take on the tag:

I used the Webster's pages "Postcards from Paris" line of paper and added ribbons (unknown), butterflies (from $ store) and some flowers (Prima) attached with MM brads for dimension. This is my dil at 39 weeks pregnant. Baby was born two days later!

Cards! (October 6, 2009)

I participated in a card crop this weekend and while I didn't get a lot done, I am pretty pleased with the challenges I was able to complete.

This was a "tag" challenge. I used a tag that I received in a RAK from a friend on The Paper Passion.

This little gift card holder was a snap to make. I can see making more of them for Christmas and other occasions.

This is a "joy fold" card. It is comprised of two pieces of cardstock the smaller one is folded over the larger one to form the front "flap". I used a kit I received last December and hadn't broken into yet!

I really like "non-traditional" Christmas colours.

This was a challenge that I provided for the crop. I used two photos that we took at the pumpkin patch a couple of weeks ago and asked that people use them as inspiration to create their own. I really like this card and was happy with the ones that others created as well.

So that's what I did this weekend!

To celebrate The Paper Passion's Anniversary, we are hosting a huge Birthaversary Online Crop from October 8, 2009 to October 11, 2009. Join us in the Forum for great challenges, prizes, give a ways and so much more. We understand it's the Thanksgiving long weekend and most of you are pretty busy but if you do have a minute to stop by, there may be a challenge or two you may be able to squeeze into your weekend. We hope you do. The fabulous new design team have set up an amazing weekend of events which you sure won't want to miss!

I sure hope you can stop by! We have great challenges, games and prizes. There is going to be lots for everyone! I'm looking forward to providing some challenges and may even be able to give you a sneak peek of my challenges later in the week.

Well this is a first..

I guess I never did tell you officially that I've been asked to be part of the design team for an online community called The Paper Passion. I first heard of them back on National Scrapbooking Day when a group of us were scrapping together at a local community center. Some of the girls were already involved in the site and when I found out it was local, I was quite excited! The owner and founder of the store and site, Rosa, came out to visit us and she was a super nice lady and so easy to talk to and so friendly. It didn't take my friend Stephanie and I long to go and check it all out and we were hooked!

Being asked to be on their team was a surprise since I have always looked at other people's work and thought it ever so much better than my own. My dil who is living with me right now and who has gotten to know Rosa and family over the last several weeks highly encouraged me to apply and it was pretty shocking to find out that they thought my work was good enough to inspire others. I told my dil that since she got me into this, she now needs to join the forum and start posting her own creations. She's a FANTASTIC card maker!

Anyway, I'm really looking forward not only to being a part of this team but to being pushed to create. I am such a huge procrastinator that it's easy to let too much time go by in between scrapping sessions because my room isn't "perfect" enough or some other lame excuse.

The other team members are Nicole (our co-ordinator), Deborah, Vanessa, Dorrie and Katie. I can't wait to get to know them better and look forward to a great working relationship! :-)

I got this image from Dorrie at The Paper Passion. She shared it there for those of us who are participating in a "thankful card swap" in honour of National Card Making Day. I wanted to share it with you too. :-)

I'm really excited about this day. I am providing a challenge for a crop over at another scrap site on Saturday. I'm not even a real card maker, but I'm still excited. I'll be sure to share my card with you.

first post - Family

Well I didn't think it would ever happen but I do in fact now have a public blog. I want to dedicate this blog to my passion for preserving memories for my family as it stands now and as it will be in generations to come. "Family" is a funny term and can mean many things but one memory that will always be a part of our family is our beloved family pet, Chance, who passed away September 23, 2009 at the age of 13. She had been part of our family for that whole time and moved everywhere with us on our gypsy-journey called "life".

She'll be missed and mourned for a long time to come.
